Traveling with Special Travel Requirements

You must book special assistance at least 48 hours before your flight’s departure

If you require special assistance at the airport or during the flight, you must inform IndiGo at least 48 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure time. 

Exceptions. If you’re travelling with:

  1. An adverse medical condition or require a stretcher, you must book special assistance at least 72 hours before departure. 
  2. A spinal support equipment (SSE), you must book special assistance at least 7 days before departure.

General Tips 

  • After reaching the airport, contact the airport’s ground staff for pre-boarding assistance.
  • Passengers may need to be accompanied by a travel companion if:
  • Severe mental disabilities prevent them from understanding and applying safety instructions.
  • They are blind and deaf and unable to communicate with the crew as a result. 
  • A motor-based disability may prevent them from evacuating.
  • They happened to be paraplegics
  • Passengers requiring a stretcher or traveling under adverse medical conditions (explained below) may need to present a Medical Form filled out by their attending physician and fax it to 0124-4068536 before booking.
  • Reach the airport early to avoid a last-minute rush. 
  • Mobility devices can be carried free of cost, subject to limitations (see below). 

Specific Tips

  • Passengers traveling with infants
    • Infants, i.e., children between 7 days to under 2 years of age are allowed to travel on an adult passenger’s lap. 
    • In the absence of valid age proof, the full fare will be charged and the infant will be allowed to travel only if a seat is available on the flight. 
    • Seating requirements
      • Lap infants must travel on an adult passenger’s lap. 
      • Infants are not allowed to occupy an independent seat.
    • Number
      • 1 infant is allowed per adult. 
      • No more than 12 infants can travel per Airbus A320 flight and up to 6 infants per flight on ATRs. 
    • Fee 
      • Lap infants will be charged a per-sector fee as indicated in Annexure A, which is:
        • INR 1,500/AED 75/USD 20 on domestic flights 
        • INR 2,350/AED 150/USD 36 on international flights
    • Baggage allowance
      • Passengers are entitled to a hand baggage allowance of 15lb/7kg per infant. 
  • Unaccompanied minors
    • Children between 2 – 5 years old are not allowed to travel alone—they must be accompanied by an adult passenger who is at least 18 years old. 
    • Children between 5 – 12 years of age are regarded as minors and allowed to travel alone as Unaccompanied Minors using IndiGo’s Flying Solo Service.
    • Children between 13 – 18 years of age have the option to travel alone or use the Flying Solo Service.
    • Unaccompanied Minors will not be accepted on the following flights—unless accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years old:
      • Flights with night halts 
      • Flights involving transfers to other airlines 
      • Stopovers exceeding 6 hours 
    • An additional per-sector fee will be charged, as indicated in Annexure A. 
  • Pregnant women
    • Pregnant passengers with uncomplicated single pregnancies:
      • Are permitted to travel till 36 weeks of pregnancy. 
      • If traveling between 32 – 36 weeks, must furnish a Fit to Fly certificate from their treating gynecologist.
      • The certificate must not be older than 7 days. 
    • Pregnant passengers with uncomplicated multiple pregnancies:
      • Are permitted to travel till 32 weeks of pregnancy. 
      • If traveling between 28 – 32 weeks, must furnish a Fit to Fly certificate from their treating gynecologist.
      • The certificate must not be older than 3 days. 
    • Pregnant passengers with complicated pregnancies:
      • Are permitted on an individual case basis.
      • Are not permitted to travel beyond 32 weeks of pregnancy. 
      • If traveling between 28 – 32 weeks, must furnish a Fit to Fly certificate from their treating gynecologist.
      • The certificate must not be older than 3 days. 
      • Medical clearance from IndiGo’s doctor is also required.
    • The Fit to Fly certificate from the treating gynecologist must state the following:
      • Weeks of pregnancy
      • Expected delivery date
      • Complications, if any
    • Pregnant passengers beyond 36 weeks will not be accepted for safety reasons.
  • Passengers requiring visual assistance
  • After reaching the airport, request the airport staff for escort assistance through the terminal, and later to pre-board and disembark the aircraft. 
  • Be sure to check in early for the flight. Remember, boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 45 minutes before departure for international flights.
  • Passengers who request at the airport can board before others. 
  • Passengers with visual impairments will not be allotted exit row seats per safety regulations.
  • The cabin crew will:
    • Provide Safety Briefing Cards in Braille. 
    • Read out the menu options, identify food items and their placement on the trays. 
  • Help open food packages on request. 
  • Passengers requiring hearing assistance 
  • After reaching the airport, request the airport staff for the type of assistance required.
  • Be sure to check in early for the flight. Remember, boarding gates close 25 minutes before departure for domestic flights and 45 minutes before departure for international flights.
  • Contact the nearest IndiGo staff member for any flight-related assistance (most airports have electronic flight displays). 
  • Passengers who request at the airport can board before others. 
  • Passengers with visual impairments will not be allotted exit row seats per safety regulations.
  • Passengers requiring visual and hearing assistance
    • Pre-requisites 
      • If requiring assistance at the airport, must notify IndiGo of the type of assistance required at least 48 hours before departure. 
      • Passengers requiring assistance with any of the following must travel with a safety assistant:
        • Fasten and unfasten their seat belts.
        • Take out and put on their lifejackets.
        • Leave their seats and reach an emergency exit.
        • Wear an oxygen mask.
        • Understand and/or follow safety instructions. 
      • May travel with a companion at the same fare as the passenger even if the ticket price has increased. 
  • Passengers requiring mobility assistance 
    • Wheelchair assistance with attendant is provided free of cost:
      • Up to the gate or aircraft door (depending on the facilities at the airport). 
      • Transferring from the wheelchair to the seat, and from the seat to the wheelchair.
      • Assistance in moving to/from the seats.
      • Assistance in preparation for eating.

Passengers requiring such types of assistance must travel with a safety assistant.

  • Passengers traveling with wheelchairs, crutches, braces, or other prosthetic devices
    • Before traveling
      • Call IndiGo to discuss your needs. 
    • If traveling with your own wheelchair
      • IndiGo will help dismantle and/or reassemble your wheelchair.
      • You can use your own wheelchair up to the aircraft and have it stored in the hold area, or check it in.
      • Passengers are allowed to use braces, crutches, and other prosthetic devices and store them as hand baggage at no additional charge.
      • The following types of wheelchairs will not be accepted onboard:
        • Wheelchairs using wet-cell batteries.
        • Wheelchair using lithium or non-spillable batteries. 
      • The wheelchair’s battery/batteries must be carried separately after sealing the terminals to prevent damage.
    • Airport Wheelchairs
      • Wheelchairs are available for use at all airports. 
      • Passengers must request the service at the time of booking and/or notify IndiGo at least 48 hours before departure by phone. 
  • After reaching the airport, they must inform an airport service agent about their requirement.
  • Passengers traveling with service dogs 
    • Passengers with sensory impairments traveling with a guide dog should make their reservations through a call center and notify IndiGo at least 48 hours before departure.
    • Guide dogs are not allowed to occupy a seat. 
    • Passengers traveling with a guide dog will be allotted first-row seats.
    • Documentation
      • Must carry valid documentation from an established institution stating that the guide dog is a trained service animal.
      • The vaccination certificate must be in order.
    • Hygiene/travel requirements 
      • The passenger must carry a moisture-absorbent mat and place it under the service dog. 
      • The service dog must be properly trained, muzzled, restrained, and vaccinated.
      • Service dogs that cannot be controlled by a passenger or posing a threat to the health or safety of other passengers will not be accepted. 
      • Meet-and-assist services can be provided if requested in advance. 
    • International travel 
      • If traveling into or out of India, the service dog must meet the destination country’s requirements.
  • Passengers traveling with spinal support equipment (SSE)
    • Must inform IndiGo at 0124 6613838 at least 7 days before traveling, and also provide the SSE’s specifications.
    • Passengers carrying their own support equipment must know how to install, use, and remove it. 
    • Spinal support equipment can be carried free of charge.
    • IndiGo’s engineering team will check to ensure that the SSE can be safely accommodated in the aircraft. 
  • Passengers traveling with broken limbs
    • Passengers traveling with fractured or broken limbs in plaster must:
      • Furnish a Fit to Fly certificate. 
      • The cast must be at least 48 hours old, except for post-cast slabs and bivalve casts.
    • Passengers who cannot bend their legs at the knee joint:
      • Must purchase an additional seat to keep the leg elevated.
        (does not apply to passengers traveling with a cast below the knee)
      • Will have the window and middle seats blocked. 
      • Will not be permitted to place their leg in a way that it obstructs anyone’s passage. 
  • Passengers with psychiatric or emotional disorders
    • Can only travel with a safety assistant.
    • The safety assistant must carry a certificate from the treating physician, along with a sedative prescription that may need to be administered before or during the flight. 
  • Passengers with autism or intellectual disability
    • Passengers with the following conditions must book their flight at least 48 hours in advance via this call center number: 09910383838. The conditions include:

    • While booking, inform IndiGo about the passenger’s specific needs and requirements.
    • Passengers with the above-mentioned conditions will be boarded first and given time to settle down before other passengers can board the aircraft. 
    • If requested at the check-in counter, the following services can be provided:
      • Assistance from the ticket counter to the aircraft seat. 
      • Meeting a family member at the gate upon arrival. 

If booking the service, be sure to provide the name of the person picking up the passenger at the check-in counter of the departure airport.

  • Passengers requiring the use of internal devices
    • Passengers traveling with internal medical devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, etc., must inform IndiGo at the time of booking and also inform the security personnel before the screening process begins. 
  • Passengers requiring portable oxygen concentrators (POCs)
    • Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) must be approved for carriage by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 
    • Can be carried free of charge as checked or cabin baggage.
    • Must meet the following conditions:
      • Must request at least 48 hours before departure that the POC will be carried or used during the flight. 
      • The POC must not interfere with the communication, navigation, or electrical equipment on the aircraft.
      • Must know how to pack, assemble, dismantle, and use the POC. 
    • If carrying as checked baggage
      • Must ensure that the POC is empty and free of any residual oxygen. 
      • If powered by a lithium battery, the battery must be removed and carried as hand baggage. 
      • If powered by other battery types, the battery must be removed and packed separately so that the battery’s terminals are protected and prevented from coming in contact with metal objects. 
      • Batteries will be subject to all the applicable requirements such as the requirements mentioned under the Aircraft (Carriage of Dangerous Goods) Rules, 2003, the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and the ICAO Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods.
    • If carrying as hand baggage
      • Passengers carrying or using a POC will only be assigned a window seat, except seats in rows 1, 12, and 13. They will not be allowed to occupy middle or aisle seats. However, the seats may be changed (if required).
      • Must be able to operate the POC device and respond appropriately to the POC’s warning signs without assistance. 
      • POC devices must be stowed under the front seat during taxi, take-off, and landing.
    • In case of a decrease in cabin pressure
      • Passengers must use the oxygen mask and not the POC as their primary source of oxygen.

  • Passengers traveling with adverse medical conditions
    • Passengers with medical conditions must inform IndiGo of their specific medical condition at least 72 hours before departure by filling out this medical form. 
    • Must inform IndiGo is post-arrival hospitalization is required upon arrival.
    • If traveling with a safety assistant, must provide their name and contact details to IndiGo.
    • IndiGo does not:
      • Provide special assistance such as lifting. 
      • Administer injections or medications. 
      • The carriage or use of oxygen cylinders (both are prohibited).
    • Passengers requiring stretchers
      • Must book at least 72 hours before departure. 
      • Stretchers are not accepted on connecting flights.
      • The passenger must:
        • Download and print the IndiGo medical form
        • Have the form filled out by the passenger’s treating physician
        • Fax it to 0124-4068536, along with:
          • The PNR/booking confirmation number 
          • Travel Itinerary 
      • Within 24 hours of receiving the fax, IndiGo’s internal physician will revert with a booking confirmation.  
      • On the day of travel, IndiGo’s medical representative may evaluate the passenger’s medical fitness to travel. 
      • Seat charges will be the equivalent of 9 seats at the prevailing rate plus a handling fee per Annexure A.
  • Passengers traveling with safety assistants

A safety assistant can be any able-bodied person assisting a passenger with a disability to exit the aircraft in an emergency or communicate with a cabin crewmember for a safety briefing.

  • Eligibility requirements 
    • Must be at least 18 years old
    • Must be mentally and physically able to evacuate the passenger during an emergency 
  • Seating requirements 
    • Must be seated next to the passenger. 
    • If traveling with several disabled passengers, must be seated in the same row or the row immediately in front of or behind the passengers. 
  • Safety assistants are required in the following cases 
    • Passengers traveling on a stretcher, in which case the safety assistant should be a medical/paramedical escort, unless IndiGo’s internal physician permits otherwise.
    • Passengers with a mental disability who cannot understand or follow safety instructions.
    • Passengers with severe mobility impairment who cannot physically evacuate themselves in case of an emergency.
    • Customers with severe vision, hearing, and speech impairments (together) who may not be able to evacuate themselves in case of an emergency.
    • Other disabilities which IndiGo feels may affect the affect the passenger’s safety on the aircraft.

How to Get Senior Discounts on IndiGo 

IndiGo offers a 6% discount off the base fare to senior citizens over 60 years of age on domestic flights, subject to the following conditions: 

  • Must carry a valid photo ID with date of birth and present it at check-in.
  • Applies only to domestic flights.

Since your smartphone will be in offline mode on board, you will need to download the content you want to watch before boarding so that you can stream it once you’re airborne.
