- Members of Turkish Airlines’ frequent flyer program (Miles&Smiles) have special privileges. They are allowed to carry extra baggage after reaching Elite or Elite Plus status.
- Classic Plus members can carry an additional 22lb/10kg.
- Elite Extra members can carry an additional 44lb/20kg or 1 extra bag on piece system routes.

To seek compensation for expenses incurred due to delayed baggage, you must make your claim—along with evidence of costs incurred during the period—within 21 days of receiving your baggage.
Turkish Airlines Damaged Baggage or Missing Items
If your checked baggage arrives damaged on Turkish Airlines, or any items are missing from it, you must:
- If you’re at the airport. Report it immediately to the Lost & Found Office. The staff will assess the damage and issue a Damaged baggage and/or missing possessions report to you.
- If you’ve left the airport. Report the damage or missing items online within 7 days through the Baggage Irregularity Report and Follow-up page.
Exceptions
Per Turkish Airlines’ baggage policy, the following damages will not be covered:
- Minor damages—such as scuffs, cuts, scratches, dents, stains, dirt, marks, and punctures.
- Loss of or damage to protruding parts, such as pull handles, wheels, external locks, zipper tabs, straps, and pockets.
- Items contained in overstuffed bags and improperly packaged items.
- Bags containing confiscated or items retrieved by security or airport personnel.
Turkish Airlines Liability for Lost and Damaged Bags
Turkish Airlines’ liability for lost, delayed, or damaged checked baggage—except mobility aids, assistive devices, and wheelchairs—is limited to:
- For flights subject to the Warsaw Convention rules. The equivalent of 250 Poincare Francs per kg per passenger, i.e., ~USD 20 per kg per passenger.
- For flights subject to the Montreal Convention rules. The equivalent of SDR 1,131 per passenger, i.e., ~USD 1633 per passenger.
Turkish Airlines Liability for Mobility Aids, Assistive Devices, and Wheelchairs
If your mobility aid, assistive device, or wheelchair is damaged by Turkish Airlines, the criteria for calculating the loss (when flying within the U.S.) will be per the provisions of the U.S. Department of Transportation, as explained below.
- On U.S. flights. You will be fully compensated for the loss or damage—regardless of any rule that limits the liability for lost or damaged baggage.
- On international flights. The compensation will be per the provisions of the Montreal Convention for such items. If the Montreal Convention does not apply for some reason, the older Warsaw Convention treaty may apply.
What’s Included in Assistive Devices?
Assistive devices include the following items, but are not limited to:
- Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs)
- Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines
- Prescription medications
- Wheelchairs
- Crutches, canes, and walkers
- Braces/prosthetics
- Medical devices for administering medications—such as auto-injectors and syringes
- Hearing aids
Restricted Baggage Items on Turkish Airlines
Per Turkish Airlines baggage policy:
- You can carry liquids and semi-solid items only after you’ve taken adequate precautions against leakages, breakages, and contamination. They must be vacuum-packed or sealed and locked in adhesive bags with adequate protection. If packed in cardboard/tin boxes, plastic bags, sacks, and containers, they will not be allowed in the cabin.
- You cannot carry more than 5 liters of liquids in your checked baggage (excluding water), and each pack must be under 1 liter.

Turkish Airlines Sports Equipment Policy
Turkish Airlines’ sports baggage policy allows you to carry most sports equipment as checked baggage. You will not need to pay any special fees if your sports equipment is not on the sports equipment list.
Points to remember
- Your sports baggage must not weigh more than 70lb/32kg—if it does, you must split it into 2 baggage pieces.
- You must inform Turkish Airlines Reservations about the size of your sports equipment at the time of booking.
- You must pack your sports equipment in a special case to prevent damage.
- Do not load your sports equipment package to the baggage belt when checking in.
