WestJet Airlines has relaxed its cancellation policies due to the COVID-19 pandemic and destination-specific advisories. Check out the cancellation policies and rules below to see which one applies in your case.

  • Cancellation Policy for Flights Affected by COVID-19
    • Applicable for flights booked between March 3, 2020 – July 5, 2022

If your travel plans are affected by COVID-19, the following cancellation rules will apply:

  • You can cancel any flight booked between March 3, 2020, and July 5, 2022 free of charge with a one-time change/cancellation fee waiver.
  • Basic fare tickets cannot be cancelled after June 22, 2022.
  • You must request the cancellation at least 24 hours before your flight’s departure.
  • After you cancel your flight, you will receive your refund in the form of a Travel Bank Credit. Any part of the fare paid with WestJet dollars will be credited back to your account (subject to the original expiration date).
  • You also have the option to change your flight—as long as you pay the fare difference.
  • If you cancel (or change) your flight within 24 hours of departure, the standard cancellation (or change) fee will apply.
  • If you purchased your ticket from a travel agent or another airline, you must contact them directly to process your cancellation request.
  • Cancellation Policy for Flights Affected by a Travel Advisory

If your flight is affected by a travel advisory—such as airport closure, bad weather, or non-COVID-19-related outbreaks—you have the following options until normal flight operations resume:

  • You can cancel your flight/trip and receive a refund, subject to the guidelines that apply to your original fare type.
  • You can change your travel dates without any charge, but only from/to the same destination. Fare differences will not apply, but blackout dates may apply.
  • You can change your destination with or without changing your flight dates.
    • If you’re flying to a nearby airport such as Abbotsford (YXX) instead of Vancouver (YVR), you will not have to pay the fare difference.
    • If you’re flying to a distant airport, you will be charged the fare difference.
    • If your new fare costs less than the original fare, the refund guidelines of your fare type will apply.
  • WestJet Cancellation Policy within 24 Hours
Applies to flights cancellations requested within 24 hours of booking

You’re allowed to cancel a flight within 24 hours of booking without paying any cancellation fee, as long as you book your flight at least 24 hours before departure. However, if you book a flight that departs within 24 hours, the normal cancellation rules and fees will apply.

  • WestJet Cancellation Policy after 24 Hours

Basic fares cannot be cancelled after 24 hours of booking and do not qualify for any Travel Credit. Other fares may be subject to a cancellation fee, depending on the fare type.
BusinessFlex and PremiumFlex fares can be cancelled for no fee on all routes, and domestic EconoFlex fares (within Canada) can be cancelled for no fee.

Note. The cancellation fees apply per person and per direction, except on flights from/to Europe where the cancellation fee is charged per person and transaction.

  • WestJet Cancellation Policy for Cancelled/Rescheduled Flights
You can claim a full refund under the following conditions:
    • Your WestJet flight is cancelled.
    • Your WestJet flight is rescheduled by more than 90 minutes.
    • One or more stops are added to your original WestJet flight’s schedule.
  • WestJet Cancellation Policy due to Death/Illness
WestJet may waive the cancellation fees in the following cases:
    • Death of an immediate family member
    • You fall ill severely
    • You receive military orders

Note. The cancellation fee waiver will be solely at WestJet’s discretion and subject to your providing valid proof. For details or assistance, call WestJet customer service number.

WestJet Cancellation Policy by Fare Type

  • Cancellation Policy for Basic Tickets

WestJet does not permit the cancellation of Basic tickets outside of the 24-hour window, i.e., Basic fare tickets can only be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, provided the purchase was made at least 24 hours before departure.

  • Cancellation Policy for Econo Tickets

After the 24-hour window, Econo tickets can only be cancelled for a fee, depending on your route and whether you cancel 60 days before departure or within 60 days of departure. For cancellation fees, refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees.

  • Cancellation Policy for Econo Flex Tickets

Econo Flex tickets can be cancelled free of charge for domestic flights within Canada, regardless of when you cancel. On all other routes, a cancellation fee will apply, depending on whether you cancel more than 60 days before departure or within 60 days of departure. For cancellation fees, refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees.

  • Cancellation Policy for Premium Tickets

Premium tickets can only be cancelled for a fee, but PremiumFlex tickets can be cancelled for no fee. The cancellation fee on a standard Premium ticket will depend on your route and when you cancel—more than 60 days before departure or within 60 days of departure. Refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees for exact details.

  • Cancellation Policy for Business Tickets

Business tickets (except BusinessFlex tickets) are subject to a cancellation fee, depending on your route and when you cancel. BusinessFlex tickets can be cancelled for no fee. For cancellation fees on standard Business tickets, refer to the section titled WestJet Cancellation Fees.

  • Cancellation Policy for Award Tickets

WestJet’s award program is different from the award programs offered by other airlines. Instead of earning and redeeming miles, you’re offered rebates through which funds are deposited into your WestJet Travel Bank whenever you fly. You can later redeem these funds for future flights.

For example, you might earn $100 which gets deposited into your Travel Bank instead of 1,000 award miles, which you can redeem to get $100 off on your next flight.

The cancellation fee for award tickets will depend on the type of ticket you’ve purchased through your Travel Bank funds, your flight route, and the time of departure.

WestJet Cancellation Fees

The cancellation fee charged by WestJet will depend on what type of ticket you’ve purchased, the fare conditions of your ticket, and when you cancel—subject to the following cancellation rules:

  • All flight tickets can be cancelled for no fee within 24 hours of booking, as long as the flight’s scheduled departure time at the time of booking is more than 24 hours later.
  • There is no cancellation fee for PremiumFlex and BusinessFlex fares—they can be cancelled free of charge on all routes. The refund will be credited back to the original form of payment.
  • Econo Flex fares can be cancelled free of charge only within Canada.
  • The cancellation fee:
    • On flights to/from Europe applies per person and per transaction.
    • On all other (non-Europe) routes applies per flight, per direction and passenger.
  • You can cancel all fares (except Basic fares) up to 2 hours before departure.
  • If you don’t cancel your flight before departure, it will be considered a No-Show.

You’re allowed to cancel your flight up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. If you don’t check in, board your flight before the cut-off deadline, or ask for a same-day change before departure, it will be treated as a No-Show—and the entire fare will be forfeited. The remaining amount (if any) will be refunded or credited based on the original fare rules of your ticket.
