Bags exceeding 203cm/80in (L + W + H) or 100lb/45kg (50lb/23kg for Peru) will not be accepted (except mobility aids and musical instruments). - The carry-on bag must not exceed 56 x 46 x 25cm (22 x 18 x 10in) in size, including handles and wheels, and must fit in the overhead bin.

According to Spirit Airlines baggage policy, the baggage fees will depend on your route, when and how you pay, and your membership status. Spirit Airlines’ baggage rules require all passengers to pay a baggage fee—except passengers who have purchased a Bundle It or Boost It combo and Free Spirit members holding a Gold status.
The baggage fee can be paid when purchasing your ticket (cheapest), after booking (website/mobile app/phone), during the check-in window starting 24 hours prior to departure, at the airport kiosk/check-in counter or departure gate (costliest).
Baggage Size and Weight
- Baggage size. The combined dimensions (Length + Width + Height) of a checked bag must not exceed 158cm/62in. Bags exceeding the size limit will incur an oversize baggage fee.
- Baggage weight. The maximum weight of a checked bag must not exceed 40lb/18.1kg. Bags exceeding the size and weight limits will incur an overweight baggage fee.
Per Spirit Airlines baggage rules, name identification tags are required outside all bags (and recommended inside them). If you purchase your baggage allowance and check in online, you can use the Fast Bag Drop at select airports to save time.
Spirit Airlines Baggage Allowance—Checked Baggage
Spirit Airlines’ baggage allowance must be purchased by Bare Fare passengers. Spirit Airlines Baggage Allowance for Lap Infants
Passengers travelling with lap infants (children between 7 days and below 2 years held on a lap) are allowed to carry 1 additional personal item (such as a diaper bag)—plus a collapsible stroller—free of charge.

Per Spirit Airlines baggage policy for military personnel, active-duty armed forces personnel are entitled to a free baggage allowance after validating their active-duty affiliation.
The baggage allowance for military personnel includes:

The military baggage allowance applies only to military personnel on active duty—and not their family members.

How to Buy Baggage on Spirit Airlines
The cheapest way to buy baggage on Spirit Airlines is at the time of booking
Spirit Airlines allows passengers to buy baggage in advance—online, by phone, or via the mobile app. You can purchase your baggage at the time of booking (cheapest), after booking, during check-in, or at the airport (costliest).
Purchasing baggage online at the time of booking is the cheapest.
To add bags online after you’ve made a reservation (but before check-in opens 24 hours before departure):
- Go to Spirit.com
- Select My Trips (as shown above)
- On the next page, enter your last name and confirmation code
(a 6-character alphanumeric code that appears in your confirmation email)
- Click on the Continue button
- Select your flight
- Click on the Add Bags link
- Pay and complete the transaction
If you are purchasing your baggage allowance within 24 hours of departure, you must access your reservation via the ‘Check-in’ tab and follow the onscreen prompts to purchase your baggage as explained above.
Remember, you can also add bags by phone or at the airport, but it will cost you more.
Missing or Delayed Baggage
If your checked baggage is missing or doesn’t arrive, you must immediately file a Delayed Baggage Report—either online via the virtual Baggage Service office, vBSO, or with a Spirit Airlines representative at the airport. After your file your report, you will receive a Baggage Irregularity Receipt or a Luggage Service Report along with a File ID for tracking your baggage and settling a claim, if necessary.
Note
Delayed/missing baggage must be reported:
- For domestic flights—within 4 hours of arrival.
- For international flights—within 21 days of scheduled arrival date.
If your baggage cannot be located within 5 days, you must file an online claim with Central Baggage. To track the status of your delayed or missing baggage online, use the Baggage Service Portal.
How to Report Damaged Baggage on Spirit Airlines
Any damage to a checked bag must be reported to Spirit Airlines:
- For domestic flights—within 4 hours of arrival.
- For international flights—no later than 7 days of receiving your bag.
Lost/Damaged Baggage Liability
Spirit Airlines’ liability for lost, damaged, or delayed bags (including contents)—except mobility aids, assistive devices, and wheelchairs—is limited to:

- International flights

Remember

Spirit Airlines’ Liability for Mobility Aids, Assistive Devices, and Wheelchairs
If your mobility aid, assistive device, or wheelchair is damaged by Spirit Airlines, the criteria for calculating the loss will be per the provisions of the U.S. Department of Transportation, as explained below.
- On domestic flights. You will be fully compensated for the loss or damage—regardless of any rule that limits the liability for lost or damaged baggage.

Follow the steps below to file a baggage claim with Spirit Airlines:

- Log in by entering your last name and file ID
- Click on Create Online Claim
- Enter the required information on the next screen
- Provide supporting documentation such as:
- Proof of purchase for the items you’re claiming

The following defects/damages will not be covered:

Spirit Airlines Sports Equipment Policy
Per Spirit Airlines sports equipment policy, sports equipment such as golf bags, skis, lacrosse/hockey equipment, fishing equipment, etc., within the standard weight and size limits will count as a single checked bag.
Per Spirit Airlines’ baggage policy for sports equipment:
- Regular baggage rules apply to most sporting equipment—you can carry them as carry-on or checked baggage items, subject to the applicable fees and weight and size restrictions.
- Overweight and oversized baggage fees will apply if your sports gear exceeds the weight and/or size limits.
- The sports baggage fee for bicycles is USD 75 and USD 100 for antlers. No overweight or oversized charges apply to bicycles.
- Golf equipment will be charged a fee for standard checked bags, provided it does not exceed 40lb/18.1kg. It includes 14 golf clubs, 12 golf balls plus a pair of golfing shoes and pull cart if attached to the golf bag. Slightly bigger golf clubs are also accepted without oversize charges.

Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs)
Spirit Airlines baggage policy lays out the following rules for passengers traveling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POCs) that they intend to use onboard:
- Must inform Spirit at least 48 hours before departure.
- POCs are exempt from baggage fee.
- The POC must be FAA-approved.
- If the POC is not FAA-approved, it must have the following label in red letters:
- Passengers must bring their own batteries to power their POCs.
- The batteries must be fully charged to power the POC for at least 150% of the flight’s duration, incl. ground connection time and unexpected delays.
- Passengers must carry spare batteries in their carry-on baggage and pack them in such a manner that they are protected from damage and short-circuiting.
- Passengers are not allowed to use the aircraft’s power outlets.
CPAPs and other Medical Devices
Frontier Airlines baggage policy allows passengers to carry (and use on the aircraft) battery-powered respiratory devices such as ventilators, respirators, and CPAP machines free of charge. However, the devices must bear a label stating that they meet the FAA requirements and are approved for use on aircraft.
Points to remember
- Must inform Spirit no less than 2 days prior to departure (48 hours).
- No medical authorization is required for carrying respiratory devices.
- Bring your own batteries to power your respiratory device for at least 1.5 times your flight’s duration.
- Carry spare batteries in your carry-on baggage and pack them in such manner that they are protected from damage and short-circuiting.
- The aircraft’s power outlets are not available for use.

Spirit Airlines Musical Instruments Policy
The major highlights of Spirit Airlines musical instruments policy are as follows:
- Musical instruments can be taken as carry-on baggage, on a paid seat, or as checked baggage.
- Musical instruments must not exceed the weight and size limits of your fare option.
- Musical instruments exceeding 381cm/150in in combined dimensions (L + W + H) or 165lb/74.8kg will not be accepted.
- Overweight and oversize musical instruments will be charged for extra weight and size.
- Larger musical instruments can be checked in or carried on a paid seat as Seat Baggage, also known as cargo in the cabin.
- Musical instruments are considered fragile items and must be packed in a hard case with adequate cushioning material specifically designed for them.
- Carry-on Musical Instruments
You can carry a small musical instrument (violin, flute, guitar, cymbals, etc.) if it fits safely in the stowage area, i.e., on top or under the seat in front of you—subject to availability at the time of boarding. Your musical instrument can exceed the carry-on baggage dimensions—but it must fit in the overhead bin. Otherwise, it will be gate-checked and delivered to you later.
- Checked Musical Instruments
Larger musical instruments that don’t fit in the overhead bin can take as checked baggage items. However, the combined dimensions (L + W + H) and weight should not exceed 381cm/150in and 165lb/74.8kg respectively. Anything heavier or larger will not be accepted, and you must pack your musical instrument properly in a hard case with adequate cushioning to prevent any chances of damage.
- Seat Baggage/Cargo in the Cabin Musical Instruments
Musical instruments that are too large, heavy, or delicate to be carried as checked baggage items can be carried on a paid seat as Seat Baggage items, also known as cargo in the cabin. However, you will need to book it in advance and meet the following conditions:
- The full fare plus sales tax will apply—but no additional charges.
- Should be properly packed to prevent damage and protect passengers/crew from injury.
- Must be carried aboard by the passenger.
- Must not exceed the maximum load limitation for seats and floor structure.
- Must be safely secured with a seatbelt/approved method.
- Must not occupy an emergency exit seat.
- May occupy a middle seat if the window seat adjacent to it is unoccupied.

Banned and/or Restricted Items on Spirit Airlines
For safety reasons, Spirit Airlines prohibits the carriage of the following items:
- Firearms and ammunition
- Firearms
- Include handguns, shotguns, BB guns, compressed air guns, paintball guns, etc.
- Permitted on flights within the United States, provided the firearm is packed and checked in, and carried by an 18-plus-year-old passenger.
- Not allowed on international flights.
- Must be unloaded, packed in a hard-sided lockable container and the key must be with the passenger.
- The passenger carrying the firearm must fill out and complete a Firearms Declaration tag for each firearm. If the firearm is packed in a checked bag, the declaration must also be placed in the checked bag near the container but not inside it.
- Ammunition
- Must be packed securely in the original manufacturer’s packaging or a wooden/metal/fiber box with a separate section for cartridges.
- Must comply with all federal, state, and local laws on the possession and transportation of firearms. For details, refer to the TSA website.
- Small arms ammunition (up to 19.1mm for rifle/pistol cartridges, any sized shotgun shells) can be carried on domestic flights.
- The maximum quantity permitted is 11lb/4.9kg per passenger.
- Loaded magazines and ammunition clips must be securely packed.
- Ammunition can be packed with a firearm.
- Firearms
- Oxygen bottles and cylinders are not allowed on the aircraft.
- PEVs like hoverboards, skateboards, etc. are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Scuba tanks
- Apple MacBook Pro laptops (older generation 15-inch devices) may pose a fire safety risk and need to be turned off and unplugged during your flight. For more details, refer to the Apple Support page.
- Liquor products more than 140-proof are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Gasoline-powered tools are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Compressed gases are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Corrosive substances incl. wet batteries and acids are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Explosives are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Flammable substances like lighter fuels and matches are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Poisons are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Magnetic and radioactive materials are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Human/animal remains and organs are not allowed on the aircraft (except cremated remains transported per rules).
- Oxygen generators are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Paints, incl. water and oil-based, liquid, aerosol, gel, etc. are not allowed on the aircraft.
- Parachutes with explosive devices for deploying the chute are not allowed on the aircraft.
Food and Alcohol Restrictions
- Food Items. Per Spirit Airlines’ baggage policy, food items are allowed for in-flight consumption—but only in disposable packaging. Liquid or gel food items exceeding 3.4 oz (100ml) are not permitted as carry-ons, but can be placed in checked baggage (per the Transportation Security Administration, i.e., TSA).
According to the TSA, the food items you carry must be whole, natural foods (such as fruit or vegetables). They must be placed in a container or properly wrapped. This means you cannot carry loose cheeseburgers or sandwiches in your bag. Plus, and you’ll have to purchase mustard sauce, ketchup, or mayo after you get past the checkpoint. Additionally, all food items will be x-rayed like your other items.
- Alcohol/Liquor is allowed in checked baggage or when purchased after the security checkpoint, subject to the following conditions:
- The total alcohol content must not exceed 140 proof.
- Max. 5 liters/passenger is permitted if the alcohol content is 48–140 proof.
- If the alcohol content is under 48 proof, it is also permitted.
- Must be in original retail packaging (unopened).
- If purchased before the security checkpoint, the normal security rules for carry-on or checked baggage will apply.
Smart Luggage Items
- Lithium-ion battery-operated smart baggage items with non-removable batteries are prohibited.
- Smart baggage items with removable lithium-ion batteries are permitted if the batteries are removed, packed safely so that the terminals are protected and carried separately in the cabin.
