Avianca Airlines’ baggage policy is similar to that of other large airlines. 1 – 2 checked bags are included in your fare, depending on your travel class and destination, with additional fees charged for extra bags above your free baggage allowance. 

The overweight and oversized baggage fees will depend on the weight, size, and route, as explained below.

Lap infants (i.e., infants below 2 years of age not occupying a seat) are allowed a free checked baggage allowance of up to 22lb/10kg). Infants travelling on a full adult fare are entitled to the same fare as the accompanying adult passenger.

LifeMiles members and Star Alliance status passengers are entitled to additional checked baggage:

  • LifeMiles Silver status members are allowed:
    • 1 additional bag of up to 50lb/23kg on Economy Class. 
    • 1 additional bag of up to 50lb/23kg on Business Class.

  • Additional carry-on baggage allowance. On all flights (except to/from the United States), LifeMiles Gold and Diamond members and Star Alliance Gold status passengers travelling on Business Class are entitled to 1 additional carry-on bag of the same weight and dimensions. 
  • If you’ve purchased an XS or S fare and want to purchase more baggage, you can buy additional baggage online at a discount of up to 50%.
  • The following items can be brought free of cost to the cabin as long as they do not inconvenience passengers or obstruct the doors/emergency exits, or block the aisles:
  • Special items for infants such as a diaper bag, crib, or a small stroller; and assistive devices for passengers using wheelchairs, crutches, braces, walkers, canes, etc. 
  • Medical items, such as POCs, CPAP machines, VPAPs, and battery-operated dialysis devices.
  • Permissible liquids, such as aerosols, gels, and liquids in containers not exceeding 100ml per liquid if packed in a transparent resealable plastic bag. If you’re carrying more than one liquid, the total of all the liquids must not exceed 1 liter and the size of the plastic bag in which the liquids are packed must not exceed 20cm x 20cm.

Carry-on Baggage Tips 

  • Cribs/baby carriages. You can carry a baby cradle on board only on Boeing 787s and Airbus A330s. Folding baby carriages can be brought up to the aircraft door, after which they will be stored in the hold. However, you’re allowed to take on board a compact folding baby carriage which will count as your free personal item, as long as it does not exceed the carry-on baggage limit of 55cm/22in in height, 35cm/14in in length, and 25cm/10cm in width, or its combined linear dimensions do not exceed 115cm/45in incl. handles and wheels. You must fold the carriage before you board the aircraft and must not use it on board.
  • Liquids. If you’re carrying liquids in the cabin, the following exceptions will apply:
    • Liquid medicines are allowed. 
    • Juices, fluids, and gels required for medical needs are permitted. 
    • Bottles containing juice, formula or breast milk are allowed. 
    • Packaged food items for infants up to 2 years old are allowed.
    • Special diet foods required by passengers are allowed.

  • General transport conditions. If your hand baggage does not comply with the required size, weight, or number of pieces allowed into the cabin, it will be checked in. If it exceeds your checked baggage requirements in terms of weight, size, or number of pieces, it will be treated as additional baggage and charged for. 
  • If you’re buying duty-free articles at an airport or on board an aircraft, the articles must be tamper-proof and backed by a valid invoice which you must carry with you. 

Avianca Airlines Checked Baggage Allowance

Per Avianca Airlines checked baggage policy, all checked bags on Avianca Airlines must adhere to the following weight and size limits

  • A maximum weight of 50lb/23kg for Economy Class.
  • A maximum weight of 70lb/32kg for Business Class
  • Maximum linear dimensions of 158cm/62in per bag.

The number of bags you can carry will depend on your travel class and route (i.e., where you’re travelling to and from). 

For example, if you’re travelling to/from Europe or between North and South America, your baggage allowance is 2 bags of up to 50b/23kg each on Economy Class. On all other routes, the baggage allowance on Economy Class is half of that, i.e., 1 bag of up to 50lb/23kg per passenger.

The baggage allowance on Business Class is 2 bags of up to 70lb/32kg each on all routes. 

What is Avianca Airlines international baggage policy? 

According to Avianca Airlines international baggage policy, you’re allowed to carry: 

  • On Economy Class
  • 2 checked bags of up to 50lb/23kg each on flights between the United States/Canada/Mexico and South America and flights to/from Europe.
  • On all other flights, you can carry 1 checked bag of up to 50lb/23kg.

Avianca Airlines Baggage Fees

Per Avianca Airlines baggage regulations, if your baggage exceeds your allowance in terms of number of pieces, size, or weight, you will have to pay additional baggage fees. If a bag is within your free baggage allowance but it is overweight or oversized, the higher charge will apply. Avianca Airlines Sporting Equipment Policy

Below is a snapshot of Avianca Airlines sporting equipment policy:

  • Avianca Airlines allows you to carry your sporting equipment as: 
  • Carry-on baggage if it does not exceed 22lb/10kg and 115cm in linear dimensions. 
  • Checked baggage for an additional cost if it does not exceed 158cm in linear dimensions and 50lb/23kg in weight. 
  • The following sporting equipment will be accepted as part of your free baggage allowance as long as it does not exceed 50lb/23kg in weight and 158cm/62in in combined linear dimensions.
    • Fishing equipment, comprising 2 fishing rods, a net, and a pair of boots.

    • Archery equipment, comprising a bow and arrows, packed in a suitable container.

  • An extra charge (plus taxes) will apply if you’re transporting the following sports equipment as checked baggage:

The bicycle must not exceed 230cm in combined linear dimensions and 70lb/32kg in weight. When packing, the handlebars must be folded and the pedals made loose.

  • Scuba diving equipment, surfboards, kitesurf, windsurfing equipment, and delta wings will incur the following baggage fee:
    • Domestic flights COP 80,000/USD 20 
    • North America ↔ Central America USD 150 
    • Other international flights USD 100/GBP 80/EUR 95

Your scuba diving equipment/surfboard must not exceed 370cm in length, kitesurf boards must not exceed 366cm in length, windsurfing equipment must not exceed 366cm in length, and delta wings not exceed 5m in length.

  • Golf, skiing, and snowboarding equipment will incur the following charges:
  • Domestic flights COP 60,000/USD 20
  • International flights USD 40/GBP 35/ EUR 40
  • If the combined linear dimensions of your sporting equipment exceed 230cm/90in and its total weight exceeds 99lb/45kg, you will have to transport it via Avianca’s freight service. 

Avianca Airlines Musical Instruments Policy

Avianca Airlines allows you to travel with your musical instrument as part of your free hand baggage or checked baggage allowance, or on a paid seat. 

  • As Hand Baggage 

You can carry your musical instrument in place of your hand baggage if is within the following limits: 

  • Max. dimensions 120cm (height) x 30cm (width) x 20cm (length) 
  • Max. weight 22lb/10kg

The instrument should be suitably packed and must fit in the overhead bin. If it cannot fit, you will have to either check it in or purchase an additional seat for it by calling or an Avianca office in your city/country. 

Aside from your hand baggage, you will be able to carry the free personal item within your baggage allowance limits. 

  • As Checked Baggage

If you intend to carry your musical instrument as checked baggage, make sure that the external combined dimensions (when packed) do not exceed 158cm/62in and the total weight (when packed) does not exceed 50lb/23kg. 

Note 

  • If your musical instrument exceeds 99lb/45kg and/or 300cm/118.11in, it will be treated as overweight and/or oversized and an additional charge will apply.
  • If you’re travelling with excess baggage and check in your musical instrument as part of your free baggage allowance, it will incur an overweight and/or over-dimension surcharge. 
  • On a Paid Seat 

You can also transport your musical instrument on a paid seat as long as it does not exceed:

  • 165.3lb/75kg in weight. 
  • 203.2cm/80in in combined linear dimensions. 

When carrying your musical instrument on a paid seat, be sure to:

  • Pack it in its original packing. 
  • Fasten it with a seatbelt.

Avianca Airlines Lost Baggage 

What should I do if my baggage is lost, delayed, or damaged on Avianca Airlines?

Lost/delayed baggage

If your baggage does not arrive when you land, you must immediately notify an Avianca Airlines staff at the airport, and show your original ticket, label, and travel document. You will then be asked to 

complete a Baggage Irregularity Report, which you will need later to get your baggage back or file a claim. You can also complete submit the Baggage Irregularity Report online

Note

  • If you’ve already left the airport, you can notify Avianca:
    • Online via the Suggestions and Complaints section 
    • By phone 
  • You have up to 21 days to file a formal claim for lost baggage.
  • If your baggage did not arrive and you live in a different city, you are entitled to receive a basic necessities kit as compensation for the delay.

Damage or looting

If your baggage arrives in a damaged condition, Avianca’s staff will assess the damage and compensate you for the damage based on the route flown and within the prevailing limitations of liability. 

  • You must submit your claim for damage/looting within 7 days after arriving at your final destination or after your baggage was removed from the airport/Avianca’s facilities.  
  • If you arrive at an airport on another airline, looting claims will not be accepted. 

Like most airlines, Avianca will not accept any responsibility for minor scratches, cuts, marks, or dents.

Lost items 

  • If you lose an item, notify Avianca Airlines by phone or at the airport’s baggage office.
  • When claiming a forgotten object, you will be required to present your valid ID and boarding pass. If you cannot be physically present to make a claim, you must send a signed authorization with a copy of your ID document and of the person you are authorizing. 
  • The time limit for claiming forgotten/lost items is within 2 months of landing or luggage arrival. Avianca takes no responsibility for such items, which may be destroyed eventually.

Avianca Airlines Liability for Lost and Damaged Bags

Avianca Airlines liability in case of loss, damage, or destruction of luggage on international trips governed by the Montreal Convention is limited to SDR 1288 (~USD 1,821). However, if you insured your baggage and paid for it before travelling, the higher amount will apply.
