Sunwing Cancellation Policy

The Sunwing cancellation policy allows free cancellations for cancelled and delayed flights, flights affected by advance departure, and Sunwing’s Worry Free/Worry Free Plus Packages that must be purchased for a fee with Sunwing Vacation Packages. Standard tickets can be cancelled for $250 at least 21 days before departure, and cancellations within 20 days of departure will be fully forfeited.

The major highlights of the Sunwing cancellation policy are provided below.

• COVID-19 cancellations. The refund deadline for eligible non-refundable flights cancelled due to COVID-19 expired on August 27, 2021, but will be retained as a Future Travel Credit valid till September 30, 2026, even if you did not submit a refund request. Travel Credits cannot be refunded, transferred, or converted into cash, but can be redeemed online, by phone, or through a travel agent toward future travel.
• Cancellations, delays, and advance departures. If your flight is cancelled, overly delayed, or affected by advance departure without reasonable advance notice, you will be provided the following remedial options:
  • A full refund of your ticket at the price at which you purchased it—for the part(s) of the trip made, as well as for the part(s) not made if they no longer serve any purpose, at no additional cost, or
  • Be transported to your destination on the next available flight at no additional cost
• If your flight is delayed by 3 hours or more due to reasons outside the airline’s control:
  • You will be provided a confirmed reservation to your destination within 48 hours of the departure time mentioned on your ticket at no additional cost from your airport, or 
  • You (or the person who paid for your ticket) will be provided a penalty-free refund to the original form of payment. 

If Sunwing is unable to offer a confirmed reservation to you within 48 hours, you will have the option to:

• Obtain a penalty-free refund for the unused portion of your ticket (which will be provided to you no later than 30 days after your flight’s disruption), or
• Request for alternative travel arrangements from your airport to your destination on the next available flight free of charge 
• All flights to/from the United States can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase, provided you purchase your ticket at least 7 days (168 hours) before departure.

Sunwing Cancellation Policy for COVID-19

According to the Sunwing flight cancellation policy due to COVID-19 (now over), all COVID-affected flights were eligible for cancellation and refund. The deadline to submit a ticket cancellation request for non-refundable tickets expired on August 27, 2021. If you did not submit a refund request by this date, your Future Travel Credit would have been automatically retained for travel anytime up to September 30, 2026. 

Future Travel Credits:

• Cannot be refunded, transferred, or converted into cash.  
• Can be redeemed online through Sunwing.ca, by phone, or through a travel agent.

Sunwing 24-Hour Cancellation

Sunwing’s cancellation policy within 24 hours applies only to flights to or from the United States. According to the policy, you can cancel any Sunwing flight within 24 hours of booking and receive a total refund if you purchase your ticket at least 7 days (168 hours) before your flight’s scheduled departure time. The 24-hour cancellation policy applies to all types of flight tickets, including non-refundable fares.

Sunwing Worry-Free Cancellation

Sunwing’s Worry Free and Worry Free Plus packages allow you to cancel (or change) your travel date/gateway up to 3 days (72 hours) before your flight’s departure. Both plans are available only when purchased with a Sunwing Vacation package, and not with only land-only bookings, cruise vacations, and ancillaries. You can purchase additional insurance protection (if you wish) by adding a Manulife Global Travel Insurance coverage to your Worry Free or Worry Free Plus package.

How does Sunwing Worry Free cancellation work?

Sunwing’s Worry Free (starting $49/plan and non-refundable) and Worry Free Plus plans (starting $99/passenger) are a great way to prepare for a last-minute change of plans. Both plans allow you to cancel or change your date of travel/gateway up to 3 days (72 hours) before departure from Canada (Worry Free) and up to 3 hours before departure (Worry Free Plus). To avail of the benefits, you must purchase a Sunwing Vacation Package with your Sunwing Airlines ticket. 

Sunwing Worry Free cancellation refund. Both Sunwing’s Worry Free and Worry Free Plus plans can be cancelled (or changed) without penalty up 3 days (72 hours) before departure from Canada (Worry Free) and up to 3 hours before departure (Worry Free Plus). The only condition is that you must purchase one of the plans within 48 hours of departure from Canada along with your Sunwing flight ticket. The fee for purchasing the plans is non-refundable.

Sunwing Worry Free cancellation waiver. If you purchase a Worry Free/Worry Free Plus plan within 48 hours of booking your ticket, you can cancel your booking without penalty up to 3 days (72 hours) before departure (Worry Free) or 3 hours before departure (Worry Free Plus) and receive a full refund in the form of a Sunwing Future Travel voucher. To avail of the cancellation fee waiver, you must purchase a Sunwing Vacation Package with your Sunwing flight ticket.

Sunwing Cancelled Flight Policy

If your Sunwing flight is cancelled without your being notified at least 14 days before departure, you can:

• Travel on the next available flight to your destination at no additional cost, or 
• Obtain a full refund of your ticket for the parts of the journey you’ve made and for the parts of the journey you haven’t made if they’re no longer of any use

Sunwing Airlines Flight Cancellation

You can make a Sunwing flight cancellation in any of the following ways:

• By phone 
• Through the travel agent that issued your ticket 
• Through a Sunwing ticket office near you

Note. Instead of cancelling your flight ticket, you can make a free one-time change to your flight (date and/or destination) without paying any flight change fee, as long as you travel by March 30, 2023, and pay the applicable fare difference between the original and the new fare.

Sunwing Cancellation Fees

The cancellation fees charged by Sunwing will depend on your fare type and when you cancel your ticket. 

• The cancellation fee for cancelling a Sunwing flight 21 days or more before departure is $250 per passenger
• The cancellation fee for cancelling a Sunwing flight 20 days or less before departure will cost you 100% of the fare paid by you (incl. taxes)

Sunwing Refund Policy

Your refund eligibility at Sunwing will depend on the fare conditions of your ticket and when you cancel it. The major highlights of Sunwing Airlines’ refund policy are as follows:

• If you cancel a non-refundable ticket voluntarily (known as Voluntary Cancellation), you will not be entitled to a full refund. You will receive a $250 refund if you cancel at least 21 days before departure and a zero refund for cancelling your flight within 20 days of departure. 
• If your flight is cancelled, fails to operate, or you are refused transportation (Involuntary Cancellation), the amount of refund will be the full price of the segments of your ticket (fully or partially used).
  • To apply for a refund, you must contact Sunwing Airlines or its authorized agent. 
  • You will not be entitled to any refund or denied boarding compensation if you have not checked in for your flight by the airline’s minimum check-in time or presented yourself at the boarding gate before the boarding deadline. 
• If your flight is cancelled or delayed (beyond 3 hours) due to reasons outside Sunwing’s control, the airline will either provide an alternative flight departing from the same airport within 48 hours or refund the unutilized portion of your ticket within 30 days of your flight’s disruption. 
• You can cancel any flight to or from the United States and receive a complete refund if you  book your ticket 7 days or more before departure and cancel it within 24 hours of booking. Your refund will be issued within 7 working days of your submitting the full documentation for your refund request if you paid by credit card, and within 20 working days of submitting the complete refund documentation if you paid by check or cash.

Denied Boarding Compensation

Sunwing doesn’t normally oversell its flights, but if your flight is oversold and you were denied boarding, you will be provided alternate air transportation or another means of transportation acceptable to you at no additional charge. However, you should have complied with your ticketing rules, check-in, and boarding cut-off times, etc. 

If you have been denied a confirmed seat on an oversold flight, you will have the option to obtain a full refund of the total fare paid by you for each unused segment of your flight, or request alternative transportation on Sunwing, or if the same is not available, on another carrier or combination of carriers in a comparable travel class. 

The compensation for involuntarily denied boarding due to oversold flights will be:

• Nil if you’re offered another flight that arrives at your destination/stopover within 1 hour of your original flight’s scheduled arrival time. 
• 200% of the total fare subject to a maximum of $/CAD 650 if you’re offered alternative transportation scheduled to arrive at your destination or first stopover more than 1 hour and less than 4 hours after your original flight’s scheduled arrival time. 
• 400% of the total fare subject to a maximum of $/CAD 1,300 if you cannot be provided alternative transportation scheduled to arrive at your destination or first stopover less than 4 hours after your original flight’s scheduled arrival time. 

Payment method. If eligible, you will receive your denied boarding compensation by cheque or draft on the and at the place where the involuntary boarding denial occurs. However, if you’re provided alternative transportation before you can receive the compensation, it will be sent to you within 24 hours. 

Exceptions to denied boarding compensation. You will not be eligible to receive any refund or denied boarding compensation if you have not complied with Sunwing’s requirements for ticketing, cut-off times, reconfirmation requirements, or if you’re not accepted for travel due to the airline’s rules/practices, or if you’re offered different accommodations on the aircraft at no extra charge, etc.

Compensation For Sunwing Flight Cancellations & Delays 

If your flight was cancelled or delayed by 3 hours or more due to reasons within the airline’s control and you were notified less than 14 days before departure, you can claim the following compensation for the inconvenience:

• $/CAD 125 for arrival delays of 3 – 6 hours, i.e., more than 3 hours and less than 6 hours.
• $/CAD 250 for arrival delays of 6 – 9 hours, i.e., more than 6 hours and less than 9 hours.
• $/CAD 500 for arrival delays of 9 hours or more. 

Payment method. You can receive the compensation in the form of cash or Future Travel Vouchers with no expiry date. 

Exceptions. You will not be allowed to claim compensation if your flight was cancelled or delayed due to reasons outside of the airline’s control or was necessary for reasons of safety.

How to claim compensation for flight cancellations/delays. To submit a claim for refund or compensation, you will need to provide your flight details and other information 48 hours after arrival but no later than 1 year after the date of disruption through Sunwing Airlines’ Refund or Compensation Claim page (after submitting, you will shortly hear from a Sunwing representative). Receipts for related expenses must be submitted through the Sunwing Cares page (response time: within 30 days).

When can I claim a refund for flight cancellations or delays?

If your flight was cancelled or delayed for safety reasons, you have the option to take the next available flight to your destination or claim a refund on the unused part of your ticket. If the flight disruption was within Sunwing’s control but not due to safety reasons, you can claim a refund plus $125 as compensation for the inconvenience. 

If you were notified within 12 hours before departure, you will be additionally entitled to refreshments, meals, access to communications, hotel accommodations incl. to-and-fro transportation (if required).
