Below are the major highlights of the Air India flight change policy: 

  • You can make changes to a domestic flight ticket without penalty if you purchase your ticket at least 7 days before departure and modify the ticket within 24 hours of purchasing it. 
  • If Air India changes your flight schedule significantly, you’re allowed to make changes to your flight booking to suit your convenience without being charged a flight change fee. 
  • You can make changes to your flight schedule—i.e., flight time, flight date, and/or flight destination by phone, through an Air India Call Center, through the travel agent you purchased your ticket from, or online (through Manage Your Trip ? Manage Booking) if you booked your ticket directly from Air India. 
  • Air India allows name corrections on tickets where the name appears incorrectly, but does not allow a complete change of name. Name changes will only be permitted if they involve legal change of name, or a name change due to marriage or divorce, subject to documentary evidence. 
  • If you’re holding a confirmed 098 Air India ticket and your domestic or international flight was cancelled or disrupted due to COVID-19 entry restrictions, you’re allowed to change your flight date, flight time, and flight destination (in which case the difference in fare must be paid for) without being charged a flight change fee. You also have the option to cancel such flights and receive a full refund. 
  • If you or an immediate family member test positive for COVID, you can postpone your flight by up to 30 days, subject to documentary evidence.

Air India Flight Change Waivers for International Flights Due to COVID-19 

If you’re holding an international flight booking for a 098 Air India flight that was cancelled or disrupted due to COVID-19 for specific travel dates, you have the option to:

  • Change your route and/or travel class and extend your travel date till December 31, without being charged any penalty. You will have to pay the applicable fare difference only if you’re changing your route outside of your previously booked sector or upgrading your seat or travel class.
  • Cancel your ticket without penalty up, as long as you do it by March 31

Applicability. You can only avail of the above-mentioned travel waivers only if you’re holding a 098 ticket/document and were booked on.

  • A flight between March 15 and March 31 which was:
    • Cancelled due to COVID-19, or
    • Disrupted due to the destination country’s visa requirements due to COVID-19, or 
  • An India-bound flight from March 13 (March 10, for flights from France) suspended by the Bureau of Immigration, India, for OCI card holders and foreign nationals because of which as they could not travel to India.

Air India 24-Hour Change Flight Policy

The Air India 24-hour change flight policy allows you to change or cancel your flight date, time, or destination without being charged any penalty if:

  • You book a domestic flight ticket within India (regardless of fare type) at least 7 days before departure, and 
  • You change your flight date, flight time, and/or flight destination within 24 hours of booking your ticket

If you cross the 24-hour deadline, you will be charged a flight change fee per applicable rates. 

Air India Flight Change Travel Waivers by Country

  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver Between India and USA. If you’re holding a confirmed 098 Air India ticket that was issued before May 4, for travel after May 4, you have the option to:
    • Rebook your flight at no extra charge up to October 31, except during the blackout period between July 25 and September 5, for travelling from India to the United States. The travel waiver includes a one-time change fee waiver that allows you to change your flight date, flight, and/or sector. You can change your flight sector as long as the country of origin and destination remain the same, but you will have to pay the difference in fare (if any). 
    • Cancel your flight without being charged any fee if your flight is scheduled after May 4.
  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver Between India and the UAE. If you’re holding a confirmed 098 ticket from India to the UAE with a travel date till August 7, and you’re not a UAE national or an exempted category passenger, you have the option to:
    • Make a one-time change to your travel date at no additional charge, as long as you do it within your ticket’s validity period. 
    • Cancel your flight without penalty. 

Exception. The travel waiver does not apply to passengers travelling on a one-way ticket from UAE to India.

  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver Between India and Germany. If you’re holding a confirmed 098 ticket between India and Germany with a travel date after April 26 you have the option to:
    • Make a one-time change of date up to October 29, without being charged a flight change fee, except during the following blackout dates:
      • Ex-India flights between August 10 – September 10.
      • Ex-Germany flights between July 10 – August 10.
    • Enjoy a no-show waiver if you reported for your flight on April 26, but could not fly due to revised entry requirements. 
    • Enjoy a rerouting charge exemption via other EU gateway points. However, you must pay the fare difference. 
    • Cancel your flight without penalty.

Remember, you can avail of the free date change waiver only once. If you want to make changes subsequently, you will be charged for it.

  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver Between India and Oman. If you’re holding a confirmed 098 Air India ticket from India to Muscat that was issued before April 21, for travel after April 24, (1800 hours) till the travel restrictions are relaxed, you can:
    • Make a one-time change without being charged a flight change fee. If the same travel class (known as RBD, or Reservation Booking Designator) is not available, you must pay the fare difference. 
    • Cancel your flight without penalty.
  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver Between India and Canada. If you’re holding a confirmed 098 flight ticket between India and Vancouver or Toronto with a travel date between April 23 and May 23, you have the option to:
    • Make a one-time change to your flight date, flight, and booking code without being charged a flight change fee. However, you must rebook your ticket by November 30—except ex-India flights between August 1 – September 10. If you change your flight or route, you must pay the difference in fare, if any. 
    • Cancel your flight without penalty.
  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver Between India and the United Kingdom. If you’re holding a confirmed 098 flight ticket between India and the United Kingdom and it was issued before April 23 you can:
    • Make a one-time change to your flight date, time, and/or flight without being charged a flight change fee, as long as you do it before October 29 (or till the travel restrictions last)—except during these blackout dates:
      • Ex-India flights between August 1 – September 10.
      • Ex-UK flights between July 15 – September 10.
    • Cancel your flight without penalty.
  • Air India Flight Change Travel Waiver for Domestic Flights within India. If you’re holding a confirmed domestic Air India 098 ticket that was cancelled or disrupted due to COVID-19 restrictions between March 15, and August 24:
    • The validity of your ticket—regardless of fare type or purchase date—will be automatically extended till December 31. 
    • You can make a one-time change to your flight date, flight, route, or booking code, without being charged a flight change fee. However, you must do it before December 31, and complete the journey by December 31. If you’re rerouting your flight and the new fare is higher, you must pay for the fare difference, but you will not be charged a reissue fee. If the new fare is cheaper, the fare difference will not be refunded. 

Air India Flight Change Policy for COVID-Positive Passengers

If you’re holding a confirmed 098 ticket on any Air India flight and you (or an immediate family member) test positive for COVID-19, you can: 

  • Postpone your flight (only once) by up to 30 days without being charged a flight change penalty. However, you must rebook your flight within the same travel class, or you will have to pay the fare difference. 
  • Claim a No-Show fee waiver if you receive your COVID-19-positive test report within 72 hours of your flight’s departure time. 

Note

  • To qualify for the COVID-19 travel waiver, you must provide a COVID-positive certificate, dated no more than 15 days before your flight’s departure date. If you’re postponing your flight because an immediate family member tests positive, you must present a COVID-positive certificate plus documentary proof of your relationship with the family member. Immediate family members can include a spouse, children/adopted children, sisters, brothers, parents, grandparents, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law. 
  • You can only postpone your flight—you can’t cancel it. If you do, you will have to pay the cancellation charges that apply to your fare type. This means if you cancel a non-refundable ticket, the entire Basic Fare will be forfeited and only the refundable tax will be refunded to you.

Air India Flight Change Options

If you’ve already booked your flight and want to reschedule it, Air India allows you to:

  • Change your flight date 
  • Change your flight time 
  • Change your flight destination or travel class (if you pay the fare difference) 

If your flight was cancelled or disrupted due to COVID-19, you will not have to pay any flight change fee for making changes to your flight. However, you will have to pay the fare difference if you’re changing your flight route or upgrading your seat. If your new ticket is more expensive, you will only have to pay the difference in fare. However, if your new flight is less expensive, the fare difference will be forfeited.

How to Make Flight Changes Online at Air India

If you purchased your ticket directly from Air India, you can make changes to your flight date, flight time, and flight destination online. 

To make flight changes online, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to AirIndia.in 
  2. Select the Manage Booking option from Manage Your Trip
  3. Enter your last name and booking reference/PNR or ticket number 
  4. Hit the Retrieve Booking button 
  5. Cancel your flight 
  6. Go back to AirIndia.in 
  7. Enter your new trip requirements 
  8. Click on the Book Now button  
  9. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your new flight

You will receive your new e-ticket by email immediately after you pay.

If you purchased your ticket from a travel agency or another source, contact them directly to rebook.

If you have any questions, call Air India’s Customer Support Office in your area. 

Note: If you modify a single flight booking on a PNR with multiple passengers, the entire PNR will be affected. To change a single passenger’s itinerary on such PNRs, you will need to contact Air India for assistance. 

How to Change the Date on an Air India Flight

If your travel plans change and you want to postpone your trip, you can change your Air India flight date in any of the following ways: 

  • Air India Flight Date Change Online. If you booked your ticket directly from Air India, you can change your flight date online through Manage Your Trip ? Manage Booking. 
  • Your online change flight request will be automatically processed through Air India’s website, as long as you pay any additional charges due online when rebooking your ticket. 
  • If your booking contains multiple passengers, the date change will apply to all passengers on your PNR. If you want the online change to apply to only one passenger on the PNR, you will have to contact Air India or your travel agent by phone or visit a nearby office. 
  • Air India Flight Date Change by Phone. You can make a flight date change on phone by calling + or an Air India office in your country. 
  • You will need to provide your booking reference/PNR number or E-ticket number and your last name to the telephone agent. 
  • The telephone agent will retrieve your flight booking and apprise you of the flight change options, including the flight change fee that may apply. 
  • The telephone agent will proceed with the changes and ask you to make a secure payment by credit/debit card. If you’re eligible to make a free date change, you will not be charged. 
  • You will receive a confirmatory mail with your new flight itinerary on your registered email ID. 
  • Air India Flight Date Change at the Destination Airport. You can physically request a flight date change at an airport counter. Visit the departure airport where you have decided to board the flight. Request an Air India executive to make the necessary changes to your flight reservation.

What are the flight change charges on Air India for domestic tickets?

If you’re making any changes to your Air India flight schedule (i.e., flight date, flight time, or flight destination) for a domestic flight, you will be charged a flight change fee based on your travel class and when you make the changes.

Air India Flight Change Rules

A few tips if you want to change a flight on Air India:

  • If you booked your ticket directly from Air India, you can modify it:
    • Online through My Booking 
    • By calling the Air India Call Center in your area 
    • Through your travel agent 
  • If you rebook a flight and your new flight ticket is more expensive, you must pay the fare difference, preferably by using the same payment method. 
  • If you had already made changes to your flight through an Air India Call Center, you cannot make additional changes online—you will have to call Air India to process the changes.
  • If you make changes to a flight booking with multiple passengers on the same PNR, it will affect all the passengers on the PNR. To make changes to a single passenger’s booking on such PNRs, contact your nearest Air India Call Center.
  • If you cannot access the My Booking page through Air India’s website or you need any help with online booking, you must contact Air India by email via ecommerce@airindia.in (or call Air India).
  • To modify a flight ticket not booked via AirIndia.in, you must contact an Air India Call Center for assistance. 
  • You can have an open ticket endorsed for travel only through Air India’s office or a travel agent—you cannot do it online.

Frequently Asked Questions on Air India Cancellation Policy

The flight date change charges on Air India for domestic flights are as follows:

  • First Class date change charges
    • F, A INR 0 if you make the changes at least 2 hours before departure
  • Business Class date change charges
    • C, D, and J INR 0 if you make the changes at least 2 hours before departure 
    • Z INR 3,000 no later than 12 hours before departure
  • Economy Class date change charges
    • Y, B, M INR 0 if you make the changes at least 2 hours before departure

The domestic flight change cost for Economy Class (H, K, Q, V, W, G, L, and U fares) is INR 2,500 or the Basic Fare, whichever is lower, if you make the changes up to 2 hours before departure. You will, however, have to pay the fare difference if you’re changing your flight route.  For Economy Class T and S fares, the flight change fee is INR 3,000 or the Basic Fare, whichever is lower, if you make the changes at least 12 hours before departure.

The domestic flight change cost for Business Class (Z) fares is INR 3,000 (plus fare difference, if any) if you make the changes at least 12 hours before departure. 

The domestic flight change cost for First Class (F, A) and Business Class (C, D, J) fares is INR 0 if you make the changes at least 2 hours before departure. You will, however, have to pay the fare difference if you’re changing your destination. 

The flight change penalty for domestic Air India flights ranges from INR 2,500 – 3,000 if you’re changing within the permissible time limits. The flight change penalty on international flights will be much higher, depending on your route and fare type. 

You can make a flight schedule change on Air India online through My Booking if you purchased your ticket directly from Air India, on phone or an Air India Country office, or the travel agent you purchased your ticket from. 

You can make a flight ticket date change on Air India online via Manage Your Trip ? My Booking if you bought your ticket directly from Air India, on phone by calling or an Air India Country office, or the travel agent you purchased your ticket from. 

You can make flight schedule changes online at Air India through the Manage Booking option appearing under Manage Your Trip on AirIndia.in. Simply retrieve your flight booking by entering your trip details, select the flight you want to modify, and follow the on-screen prompts to change your flight schedule.

Non-refundable Air India tickets, as the name suggests, cannot be cancelled and refunded. If you cancel a non-refundable ticket, the entire fare (except taxes) will be forfeited.

That depends on what type of fare you’ve purchased and when you cancel the ticket. If you’re cancelling a domestic flight ticket in the following classes no less than 2 hours before departure, you will not be charged any fee:

  • First Class F, A
  • Business Class C, D, J
  • Economy Class Y, B, M

For other types of tickets, you will be charged a cancellation fee ranging from INR 3,000 – 5,000 or the Basic Fare (whichever is lower), depending on your fare type and when you cancel. 

You can rebook your Air India ticket online if you purchased it directly from India. To rebook your ticket, you will need to first cancel your flight via Manage Booking (it appears under Manage Your Trip), and make a fresh reservation via AirIndia.in. 

If you purchased your ticket from a travel agent or some other source, you must contact them directly to rebook. If you have any questions, call Air India’s Customer Support Office in your area.
