British Airways Fare Classes

Although British Airways offers 4 travel classes, it has 22 types of revenue fares (fare classes) and 4 redemption classes (booked with mileage points/Avios). Normal (revenue) fares can be booked with cash, and redemption fares with mileage points. 

The fare classes for each travel class determine the cost of the ticket and the flexibility offered by the fare. The cheaper fare classes sell earlier and the costlier fare classes sell closer to the travel date.

How to Reserve Seats on British Airways Flights

You should reserve your seat on British Airways as early as possible. Ideally, you should select your seat when you’re booking your flight. This will ensure you get a seat of your choice and you don’t sit separately from your group.

• Use the Manage My Booking option to know whether you can choose your seat for free.
• Seat selection depends on the type of ticket you buy and your travel class.
  • On a Basic Economy fare (hand baggage only), seat reservation always costs extra. 
  • You can reserve seats for free (in most cases) on the following fares:
    • Plus Flex Economy fares allow you a free seat reservation right from the time you book your flight.
    • Semi-flexible (Plus) fares allow you to reserve your seat for free starting 48 hours before your flight’s departure.
    • First Class fares allow you to reserve your seat for free right from the time you book your flight.

What is the cost to reserve a seat on British Airways?

The cost of reserving a seat on British Airways will depend on your route and travel class. 

• Cost of Reserving a Standard Economy seat
  • UK domestic and Euro Traveller fares start from GBP 7 (~USD 9.50) per way. 
  • International fares start at GBP 20 (~USD 27). 
• Cost of Reserving a Standard Premium Economy seat (World Traveller Plus) starts from:

Exceptions 

• All seat selections are free from 24 hours before departure, when check-in starts. 

• Executive Club Bronze and Oneworld Ruby members are allowed to select their seats free of charge 7 days before departure. 
• Executive Club Silver/Gold and Oneworld Sapphire/Emerald members are allowed to select their seats free of charge at the time of booking. 
• Families travelling with lap infants are allowed to select their seats for free at the time of booking.  Children will always be seated next to an adult passenger but families may not be seated together. 

British Airways Avios Reservations

How to book British Airways flights with Avios points

To transfer your Avios points or book a flight with Avios, you must have a British Airways Executive Club account (click to sign up for an account). Assuming you have enough Avios points in your account, follow the steps below to book your flight with Avios points. 

1. Go to BritishAirways.com. 
2. From the Book tab, select Book a flight with Avios.
3. You’ll be prompted to log into your Executive Club account by entering your membership number/username and PIN/password.
4. On the next page, enter your flight requirements, such as your departure and arrival airports, date, travel class, and the number of passengers. 
5. On the next page, you’ll be shown the award availability for your flights. 
6. Select a flight you like and view the price quote at the bottom of the page.
7. Click on the Continue button.
8. Follow the prompts to enter your payment information and complete your booking.

Note

To book an award flight with Aer Lingus and Alaska Airlines, you will have to call the U.S. call center at +1-800-452-1201. This number is open from 7:30am to 8:00pm EST.

How to Use Chase Sapphire to Reserve a British Airways Flights

You can transfer your Chase Sapphire points to British Airways on a 1:1 ratio with the following cards:
